TE was awarded SolarLand Phase 2 by JTC Corporation in January 2020 and the project was completed in November 2021. Operating near Changi Airport, SL2 makes use of state-of-the-art RE tech, including a first-of-its-kind containerised mobile substation which unlocks the near-instantaneous redeployment of the substation unit. The project also uses an advanced portable and compact mounting system, allowing a higher number of panels to be deployed. These configurations give SL2 one of the highest solar intensity profiles in the world — measured in watts per square-meter — and have led to a 60% increase in PV capacity, up to 19.2 MWp from the original tender capacity requirement of 12 MWp. Furthermore, unlike traditional solar systems, the improved design removes the need for ballast blocks to stabilise the arrays, resulting in huge cost savings from the steep drop in material and labour costs. This also means that the speed of installation and redeployment is greatly accelerated, enhancing mobility.

Other new industrial practices will be introduced such as drone-led cleaning and agrivoltaics (i.e., urban farming). To fully utilise every inch of space allocated for the project, suitable crops will be planted below the solar arrays through our community urban farming initiative that will run concurrently on-site. This versatile approach enables us to contribute to another target of the Singapore Green Plan 2030: food security.
